Since May 1, 2025, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and other major banks nationwide have come up with new regulations on the use of ATMs. These reforms influence the number of free transactions that you will receive, the charges that you incur above the ceiling, and the practice with which the banks manage the ATM services. Regardless of whether you use ATMs on a regular basis or irregularly, here is a simple and concise guide to get you in track what is new.
Free Transactions and Charges
At the ATM of the own bank, you proceed to receive free five free ATM transactions per month. When you apply at an ATM belonging to another bank, the number of transactions that you will receive free of charge, will be based on your position:
- Metro cities (such as Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai): 3 free transactions
- Non-metro areas: 5 free transactions
Once you have gone past the free limit amount, banks may levy a fee of ₹23 and 8.5 rupees on cash withdrawal and non-financial transactions, such as inquiring about balance, or a mini statement.
ICICI Bank’s New Charges
The ICICI Bank has also changed its ATM charges, cash transactions charges effective August 1, 2025:
- 3 free cash transactions in a month inside the branch subsequently, every transaction costs ₹150
- The limit imposed on free cash deposit is ₹1 lakh per month over and above which there is a charge
- ATM withdrawals in other banks (outside India) are ₹125 per transaction with 3.5 currency conversion fee
- The pricing of non-financial ATM transactions in foreign countries is at ₹25/- per transaction
Security and Timing Updates
Banks now are charging 50 rupees each transaction when depositing over ₹10,000 in off hours (4.30PM to 9.00 AM). The idea is to control ATM traffic and to enhance security in off hours time.
Final Thoughts
The new ATM policy of 2025 will focus on achieving a trade off between the convenience and cost and security. To prevent additional Costs:
- Aim at not going over your free transaction limits
- When it is feasible use your own bank ATM
- Monitor your usage on a monthly basis
Such improvements in ATM services enhance transparency and allow banks to deal with the increasing expense. Just to be on the safe side, you should clarify the particulars of your bank on its official web-site or at a local branch.
